No Surprises Act
The No Surprises Act is a step towards ensuring that healthcare experiences are free from unexpected financial surprises. This federal law protects patients who are not using insurance from surprise medical bills, enabling them to focus on their well-being without worrying about unexpected costs.
-
Under this law, I commit to providing you with a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) upon request, giving you a clear understanding of the expected costs for services provided. Additionally, you will always be billed at the time of service to prevent any unexpected bills down the road. Should the amount you are billed for a service exceed your GFE by $400, you can dispute the bill.

Insurance FAQs

No, I am not partnered with insurance companies.

Possibly! Depending on your insurance provider and individual policy, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement of out-of-pocket therapy fees directly from your insurance provider. These are also known as “out-of-network” benefits. Out-of-network can be a convenient way for you to access the support you need while using your insurance coverage.
-
• Increased privacy
• Choice of therapist
• Greater flexibility in session frequency and duration
• No diagnostic requirements
• Less administrative burdens

You’ll pay the full fee at the time of service, and I’ll provide you with an itemized list (“superbill”) at the end of every month that includes all of the necessary information for potential reimbursement. Once you have the superbill, you’ll submit it directly to your insurance via their preferred method(s). Please note that superbills contain information that may be considered sensitive, including my practice information, your contact information, dates of service, procedure codes (“CPT codes”) that identify the services provided, any diagnoses you’ve received (“ICD codes”), and fees paid.

Your out-of-network benefits are likely summarized in the Summary of Benefits and Coverage information package that you received when you signed up for your insurance policy. Sometimes, you can also find the Summary of Benefits and Coverage information on your online insurance portal. However, the best and easiest way to find out if you have out-of-network benefits is to call your insurance company directly to verify. The number to call for mental/behavioral health services is usually on the back of your insurance card!
-
• “Are out-of-network benefits included in my plan?” (Begin by asking whether your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, as some may not offer any coverage)
• “If I have out-of-network benefits, what is the coverage percentage?” (Ask about the percentage of costs that your insurance plan will cover for out-of-network services - for example, your plan may cover 50% of the “reasonable and customary” charges for out-of-network care)
• “What is your definition of ‘reasonable and customary’ rates for out-of-network care?” (This can vary by insurance provider, services provided, and/or geographical area, and can affect how much the insurer will reimburse)
• “Do I have an out-of-network deductible for outpatient mental health services?” (You’ll want to know if there’s a certain amount in service fees that you need to pay for out-of-pocket before your insurance benefits kick in)
• “Do I have any prior authorization requirements for out-of-network care?” (If you do, your insurance company will first need to authorize your out-of-network care before your services are covered)
• “How do I submit claims for out-of-network services?” (This will give you a chance to familiarize yourself with your insurance provider’s specific process and required documentation for reimbursement)
Make sure to take detailed notes during your conversation with your insurance company representative and request written confirmation of the information provided. Understanding your out-of-network benefits is crucial for making informed decisions about your healthcare and managing your expenses effectively.
